- Joined the Italian Diplomatic Service, April 1970.
- At the Political Directorate, United Nations and Disarmament Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1970-1974).
- First Secretary (Political) at the Embassy of Italy in Moscow (1974-1978).
- Deputy Consul General in New York, seconded to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations (1978-1980).
- Director of the Foreign Network Bureau, Directorate General of Personnel, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1980-1983).
- Counsellor (Defence) at the Permanent Delegation of Italy to NATO in Bruxelles (1983-1985).
